2018 has been an absolutely epic year. From the unforeseen fun of England’s exploits in the World Cup to the endless hot days, it really will take some beating. Though the festival season has long been in full swing, there are still plenty of chances to catch some excellent music in paradise like locations all around Europe.
From quasi-religious techno sermons in city centres to beautiful beach gatherings via brand new first timers in cultural hotspots, there’s lots to get you excited. Here comes a roundup of the best places to head to before the season is out.
This is a brand new event from August 23rd to 26th that is powered by the experts behind EXIT. It takes place on a beautiful beach location in Anaklia and boasts more than 150 headliners like Juan Atkins, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Guti, DJ Tennis, Butch, Moscoman, Claro Intelecto and many more. The location means there will be great sunsets and sunrises each day with top-notch production on all stages.
Backyard Sessions, Sweden
September 1 – 2
After the success of last year, Malmö’s Backyard Sessions Festival is back again on September 1st, offering a mix of DJs, live music, art and street food. By day, it takes place in a huge park that features two stages, a children’s village, and pop-up street kitchens. By night, it moves to Moriskan Pavilion, a Malmö music palace built in 1091. Flava D, Or: La, Dominik Eulberg and many more all play.
The Ark Cruise, The Mediterranean
August 30 – September 3 / September 3 – 7
Picture the scene: you are laying back in the sun, on board one of the world’s most luxurious cruise liners with 4,000 passengers, all being soundtracked by over 50 DJs from a variety of electronic music genres and first-class entertainments. Loco Dice, Luciano, Patrick Topping, Camelphat, Claptone and many more all play from 30th August to September 3rd or 3rd to 7th September.
Electric Zoo, New York
August 31 – September 2
The most epic edition of New York’s electronic music festival runs from August 31st to September 2nd and also promises the most spectacular production across magically designed and hugely immersive stages. Chris Liebing, Alesso, Martin Garrix, Marshmello and many more all play. It takes place for the tenth edition in Randall’s Island Park.
Nova Batida, Portugal
September 14 – 16
From September 14th – 16th, Nova Batida is a brand new city festival for Europe blending together the freshest music, art, culture and lifestyle from all corners of the world in one of the most exciting creative hubs, namely Lisbon. It’s one of the hottest cities both literally and figuratively and Little Dragon, Mount Kimbie, Gilles Peterson, Maribou State, Mafalda, Mndsgn, George Fitzgerald and more all play.
The BPM Festival, Portugal
September 20 – 23
The BPM Festival started as an industry networking event for DJs, label owners, managers and artists in Mexico and has now relocated to Portugal. It returns to Portimão and Lagoa once more from September 20th to 23rd 2018 for a multi-venue, multi-day carry on featuring All Day I Dream’s Lee Burridge, Miami’s Behrouz, live act Guti, Vatos Locos founder Hector and the deep digging Bill Patrick and many more.
Into the Valley, Spain
September 28 – 30
Into The Valley Festival 2018 is taking place in a brand new and unique location from 28th to 30th September in an ancient Castle of Sohail in the town of Fuengirola on the Andalusian coast of Spain. This sun-soaked place is a real paradise location with starry skies at night and clear blue skies in the day, afterparties, beach stages, a theatre stage and more featuring guests like Acid Pauli, Amelie Lens, Anastasia Kristensen, Omar-S, Peggy Gou, Young Marco and more.
Moga Festival, Morocco
October 12 – 14
Moga is an electronic music and digital arts festival with a view to shining a light on Moroccan, Maghrebian and African national scenes; alongside a host of quality underground international artists. It plays out in Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the filming location of ‘The Red City’ in the Game of Thrones TV series. Native acts include Amine Dhobb, Achil and Hisham, whereas international names like Agoria, Acid Pauli, Jan Blomqvist, and Seb Zito also play.
Movement Torino, Italy
October 12 – 13
This is a real techno mega-fest for 15000 people in Lingotto in Turin, a huge conference centre that is transformed into various different spaces with stunning production; LED screens and lights. Jon Hopkins (live), Nina Kraviz, The Martinez Brothers, Joseph Capriati, Amelie Lens, Charlotte de Witte, Derrick May, Levon Vincent, Solomun, Underground Resistance, DJ Bone and plenty more all play.
October 26 – 27
This one is more of an Autumn event but the weather in Spain means it will be as hot as many locations around Europe would be in high summer. It’s an avant-garde affair on October 26th and 27th featuring heavyweight likes Aphex Twin, MGMT, Editors, Slowdive, Jon Hopkins and more.
This is a one day gathering in London with a main stage imported from Hamburg, which is where the titanic label calls home. It’s headed up by Solomun and he will be joined by Adriatique, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, HOSH, Karmon, Johannes Brecht, Undercatt, Lehar, Magdalena, Musumeci, Andy Bros and Magit Cacoon as well as Pimm’s, cocktails, a beefy sound system and plenty more surprises.
ABODE in the Park, London
ABODE is one of the UK’s largest house promotions. They’re deep in a sensational season at Amnesia in Ibiza, run their own multi-day festival in Malta and host a one day session in London’s Finsbury Park that sells out each year. It’s back in 2018 and is the best way to get an authentic tech house experience in the heart of the city. September 28th is the date with names like Groove Armada, Sidney Charles, Sante and East End Dubs.
MINT Festival, Leeds
MINT Festival is the biggest dance festival in the north of the UK. This year it is at an airfield and boasts some incredible stages such as the world’s biggest disco ball, a huge aircraft hangar and Arcadia afterburner. DJ EZ, Eats Everything, Adam Beyer, Moodymann, Peggy Gou and many more play at what is always a high energy event.
Moovin Festival, Compstall
August 24 – 26
August Bank Holiday is a perfect excuse for a party and Moovin know that. Taking place at the eco-friendly Whitebottom farm in the stunning countryside of Etherow Country Park, Compstall, it mixes up heritage acts with contemporary stars and includes Amp Fiddler, De La Soul, Craig Charles, General Levy and more in stages that include open-sided barns and cow sheds, with countryside production making it all feel organic and authentic and less commercial than many.
